Revenue can grow while a business becomes less healthy. Unit economics helps reveal whether growth creates or destroys value.
Start with the economic unit
Define the unit that best represents how the business earns money: a customer, account, order, subscription, project or location. Then understand the revenue, direct cost, acquisition cost, servicing cost and expected duration attached to that unit.
The goal is not to force every company into one SaaS formula. It is to understand what must be true for one additional unit of growth to make economic sense.
