The automation payback model

Automation ROI is often overstated because theoretical time savings are treated as cash savings. A better model starts with the actual process.

Baseline the work

Measure transaction volume, time per task, labor cost, error/rework cost and current cycle time.

Apply realistic adoption

Not every task will qualify and not every user will adopt immediately. Model a ramp instead of 100 percent utilization on day one.

Separate capacity from cash

Saving ten hours creates capacity. It becomes direct cash savings only if cost is actually removed or avoided.

Include the operating burden

Implementation, licenses, integration, monitoring, training and exception handling continue after launch.

Calculate payback

Compare cumulative realized benefit with implementation and ongoing cost. Then test the result under conservative assumptions.
