AI controls should match consequence, not novelty

New technology can tempt organizations into one of two mistakes: treating every use as dangerous or treating novelty as harmless. Proportional governance avoids both.

Assess consequence

Consider the people, money, rights, operations and reputation that can be affected by a material error.

Assess autonomy and reversibility

A suggestion a person can easily reject is different from an agent taking an external action that is hard to unwind.

Scale the control set

Increase evaluation, logging, approvals, monitoring and escalation as consequence and autonomy rise.
